10/16 to 10/21 -- NO SCHOOL - MEA and Workshop Days
Math:
This month we lay the groundwork for teaching multiple digit addition and subtraction. We will work on place value. Students will learn how the placement of a digit determines a number's value. We will also measure using non-standard measuring tools.
Reading:
We have begun our daily rotation during math. After a 20 minute shared reading session students rotate through a menu of reading and writing activities. I meet with groups 2 or more times each week. This month our comprehension focus is on making connections while we read. We will study and practice making text-to-text, text-to-self, and text-to-world connections.
Grammar/Writer's Workshop:
This month in grammar we will continue working on nouns. We have already discussed common and proper nouns. We will continue with collective and plural nouns before starting a unit on verbs. On Fridays, your student will be given a list of 9 or 10 high frequency words. Please help them learn these words by the following Friday.
Social Studies/Science/Health:
Weather is our topic for October. Students will study the causes of different types of weather, for example tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, and will record the weather in a city to see how it changes overtime.
